I enjoy all three Tubular Bells albums but I never particularly get on with the introductions, I don't like the excorxist bit from TB1, or Sentinel from TB2 and certainly not the first two tracks from TB3, the rest of these albums is excellent and I never tire of the tunes but I always want to skip the introductions and get to the core of the albums which for me is after the first track!  :/

The Tubular Bells intro is crucial to me. I always get the impression that the music is coming from another planet. It's so unreal... The gradual build-up is a moment of music that Mike never managed to match in his entire carreer - just look at how TB2003 starts off loud right from the beginning.

About TBII and TBIII, well, I dislike the entire albums, I can't comment much. But Tubular Bells is entirely treasurable to me. Everything there is idiosyncratic and unique.

I understand what you're saying but personally I find the beginning of TB dull and that is the one bit that everyone recognises from the Excorcist and without that, maybe people wouldn't say that Mike's music all went downhill after TB  ;)

I love the Tubular Bells intro.  I like Sentinel from TBII, but much prefer the remixed (and much shorter) version that is on The Best of Elements and The Essential.

As for TBIII, I like The Source of Secrets but not as much as the other two.  As for The Watchful Eye, I think it needs to be there as the theme is revisited several times throughout the album.  Track 2 isn't breathtaking on its own, though.

true, I like that theme but that track just doesn't compare with Dark star as a second track  :)

The shorter version of Sentinel is good but its one of the few tracks by MO that I'm bored of...... :/

I don't think there's much point in comparing track numbers... if we compare TBII and TBIII then this is what you get:

Sentinel vs The Source of Secrets (similar but not)
Dark Star vs The Watchful Eye (not really fair is it?)
Clear Light vs Jewel in the Crown (maybe this one's a bit more fair)
Blue Saloon vs Outcast (this is probably the silliest comparison of all)
Sunjammer vs Serpent Dream (two very different tracks)
Red Dawn vs The Inner Child (perhaps Red Dawn would be better compared with Serpent Dream due to the guitar? or not...)
The Bell vs Man in the Rain (well I don't think you can do that...)

Beyond that it doesn't work because TBII has 7 more tracks whereas TBIII has only 4.  I think you'd do a lot better to consider each album as a single entity instead of asking how it compares to the others.

Maybe Mike should have given them completely different names - they obviously have TB elements, but then there's Tubular World on TSODE... and that didn't get called TB2.5, did it?

true true, I see your point about that one, although the second track in a Mike Oldfield album such as this is quite important because it gets the new tunes going!  :)

wow so i'm the complete opposite. those opening themes are what did it for me in all TB albums. then again i've always been more of a fan of his piano work than other intstruments.

Well, I think the TB intro is nice, but I don't love it like some do. It's not the main reason I listen to the album by any means. But it's nice.

The Tubular Bells intro is one of the most powerful and dramatic pieces of music ever written, how could you dare skip it!!!!.
I also love Sentinal, it's wonderful, i think it is a perfect update of the original.
