I tried to reply to your email about this, Sonilink, but it bounced. Here's my answer:

He's working on a new album. He has said that he wants to try
making the best use of current technology, pushing it to the limits
like Tubular Bells pushed the technology of the 1970s. He has been trying out a lot of new software, and has been working with FL Studio and experimenting with virtual vocalists.
I would say that it will probably be quite strongly electronic music
(I'd guess not that different to Tres Lunas), but we will have to wait and see! It's also possible that he'll do it as a single long
instrumental track (after he asked about what kind of music people would like to hear at the TB2003 press conference), but that's not at all certain.

The problem was with the topic title and not the original message, by the way, so Sonilink wouldn't have been able to edit it himself. I've corrected it now.

After reading what Korgscrew wrote about the possible style of the new album, I was wondering, maybe Mike plans an anti-Amarok. Everything played by keyboard, computers and "not much handplayed guitar at all really".  :) We know how Mike likes to turn things upside down (Bach/TB1 opening). :)

Also I think it is a bit strange....in many interviews over the years we have heard Mike say that he is not really a keyboard artist, that playing things on keyboard takes him a long time and if he used guitars he could do the same thing in a few minutes and that he is a much better guitarist than keyboard player. Yet, he seems to concentrate more and more on electronic, keyboardbased music.

Does anybody have a clue why he does this? I mean, he knows what his strenghts are. Is guitar playing not a challenge for him anymore? Has it become to easy for him mainly just using guitars? Or a more taboo-like question - is he afraid to play guitars due to declining ability to play (lack of practise, getting older etc.) knowing that he will not be able to reach his previous level?

Personally, I think he likes to explore new areas and at the moment it just seems to be electronic music. But I hope he remembers to put some guitar on the new album.

In the not too distant past, he's also mentioned the idea of working somehow on combining the sounds of 'real' instruments and computers. I thought he'd already been doing that for the past 23 years or so, but I guess he had something new in mind - probably something linked to the idea I mentioned above of pushing new technology to its limits. I think it's really best we wait until we hear it - it can often be hard to tell what Mike means when he says things like these!

I would suppose that Mike's decision to use synthesisers is largely influenced by his liking their sounds. He could have consciously avoided them on Guitars, had he wanted to, but instead chose to fire up the MIDI Guitar rig. It's not easier to play a MIDI guitar part than it is to play an electric or acoustic guitar part (in fact, it can be harder, as imprecise playing can sometimes upset the system), so I can only assume that he did that for the purposes of getting those particular synth sounds.

But why he's silent regarding his new album?
Is it top secret,it must be,afaik.

I've been checking this site every day hoping to see a headline with album info and a release date!  This has definitely been the longest period of inactivity since i've been a Mike Oldfield diehard!

Hopefully it wont be too long now! Someone should give Mike a phone see what's happening!

hi peeps, i was wondering regarding the new album, if there will be "snipets" available like the tres lunas promo stuff with a few seconds of music, even if this was to happen now to keep the interest up, or increase it, i have been a little dissapointed with some of the music after TSODE, not that its bad, but it seems rushed to me, like Mike was doing it to please the fan base, some, like TB2003 was very good, but maybe thats because it was a passion of his to remaster it with todays technology, TMB, and Guitars, while good in some ways seemed a little "must make another album" and he couldn't be arsed lol, i hope, like everyone else, that this is going to be a return to better days, sorry for going off topic!

regards lee :D
