Hi all,
when jamming with the band the other day we came across a guitar riff that sounded rather cool. Someone said it's from a song by Led Zep or so, but we couldn't find out where exactly it's from.
Sounds like this:

Any help? Thanks!

It's nothing I recognise. With pentatonics like that being popular with rock guitarists, there are probably lots of things which sound a little like it if you look. I think I'd just use it - it could form part of a great rock song...

Hi Carsten, I'd been wondering where you're hiding  :p
I don't recognize the riff either. Might be Led Zep, I'm not too familiar with their stuff.

Cheers, Holger (formerly known as AF)

Thanks Korgscrew and Holger. Maybe you don't recognise it because of our arrangement. The guitar single-notes are probably not there in the original, plus the drums are probably quite different.
What is important is just the bass pattern plus git chords: 3 x 1/16 notes, then 3 X 1/16 pauses, repeat this 2x.
"PAbadam - PAbadam - PAbadam"

I'm sure I've heard it before.

To my ears it's Led Zeppelin alright......song called "Kashmir".

If this turns out to be correct what do I win?   ;)

But then Kashmir raises in pitch every three hits - I'd not say that anyone could claim it was some kind of copy of Kashmir just because it has a similar rhythm. I do recognise the similarity, but it's also not the only place in which that rhythmic pattern has been used . If you ask me, the two being rhythmically related isn't enough to call them the same riff...but it depends why you're asking. If you're asking "Does this remind you a little of Kashmir?" then yes, it does a little...if you're asking "Is this too similar to Kashmir to use in my own song without me being accused of plagiarism?" then no, I don't think it's similar enough.

You're right. It's just the rhythm that's the same.

If you read Carstens post carefully it says that he thought the riff sounded cool and someone else said it was from Led Zeppelin or so.
I guess this someone must have ment "Kashmir".
It's not the same I know, but it does ring a bell when you compare the both.

And as for plagiarism Carsten or you are free to use this riff if it were up to me. But hey, I'm just a listener, not a musician.

Thanks so much jael & Korgscrew,
yes I'm now completely sure Kashmir was the thing that came to mind. Isn't it interesting how a motif comes out so similar and still so differerent out of a guitarist's (my  :D ) fingers just because it has been lurking in the back of his musical mind for some time. Well, by now we have built a whole new song around it. Which we will play at our next gig. We're not afraid of being accused of plagiarism. This starts AFAIK at 8 bars or so, which isn't the case. And jael, maybe we will really give a prize to the 1st person in the audience who recognizes what it's similar to. Anyhow, if you like a prize, I could send you our CD via snail mail. Just email me.
Korgscrew, thanks for the encouragement. You always look at things from a musician's point of view
Holger, finally I found out what AF means. (Endlich is der Jrosche jefalle -  schöne jrooß naar Kölle!;)

Bye

Now there's a way to keep your conversation with Holger private. I can't keep up when you guys start using dialect  ;)
(finally the coin has fallen, have a nice journey to Cologne. This took me a few times reading.)

I'm always in for a free CD but I was just kidding about getting a price for this. Just glad to be of service. I know exactly what it's like when your mind goes round in circles trying to figure out what it was you can't remember.

Endlich is der Jrosche jefalle

Dat is joot ;)

I have read somewhere that this 8 bar thing, though frequently heard, is not correct. I believe the laws are actually much more complicated. But don't worry, you'll have no problems with that one, i think. :) Good luck with the new piece!

And BTW, I was delighted to find out that you did finally write that TMB review  :p  Unfortunately, by that time my computer was already broken.

Thanks to you all!
(jael: excellent job, except Jrooß means greetings not journey.)

I haven't been in your region for about 7 years.
It's all in the exercise..... :)
