OK folks, looking for advice on which to listen to next in my (re)Discovery and (new)Discovery of Mike.

I am listening to one new CD each Friday to try and make the magic last (though I was a bit weak last week and listened to Tubular Bells 2003 on the Sunday after MB, I figured it was just a remake, how wrong I was).

So, choices available this week:

Hergest Ridge
Collaborations
Heaven's Open
Guitars
Light
Shade

(the last few are on order; Killing Fields, Exposed and MOTS when available here in Oz).

I am leaning towards either Hergest Ridge or Shade (how different can you get) with Guitars an outsider.  I last listened to HR about 22 years ago, so have totally forgotten it (until I hear it again of course).

I reckon Hergest Ridge is by far the best of those but I am a "keep the best 'till last" sort of bloke so I would suggest leaving that until after the others. If you remember it from many years ago you know you have something great to look forward to...

So my order would be:

1) Guitars (get it over with, I know some will disagree)

2) L+S (suggest you listen to them together, they aren't as different as you might think)

3) Heaven's Open. Mixed opinions on this, Some people rate Music from the Balcony quite highly, others (like me) don't get it!

4) Collaborations (don't have this myself so not sure but I'll stick it 4th anyway).

5) The fantastic Hergest Ridge!

Orrrrr you could get Boxed and include Hergest Ridge AND Collaborations. The beuty of that is that you get the remixed version of Hergest Ridge which is exactly the same mix as the cd re-issue (if you find a decent vinyl version of the original it's way better). There's a solution,

TR, this is my suggestion:

1) Guitars - aside from a couple of immediately catchy tunes, this album took some time to grow on me. I'm not sure why, since it's not as aurally challenging as some other works, but I think it's easy to simply dismiss it as 'mediocre'. I personally think there's a lot to appreciate, here.

2) Light + Shade - I think this has some similarities, in style and mood, to Tr3s Lunas, and I believe you said you enjoyed that album? There are also some beat-heavy, dance-y pieces.

3) Hergest Ridge - I would leave the familiar for later, after exploring the unfamiliar, still... if it's been twenty years, it may very well seem 'new' to you.

4) Heaven's Open - For me, the highlight is the great title track. I'm still unsure about my feelings regarding the instrumental "Music From the Balcony". The rest of the material I find pleasant, though mostly unmemorable.

I'm not familiar with Collaborations.

Thanks for all the suggestions folks - certainly gave me a few ideas.

To answer a few questions / suggestions:

1)  I already have Boxed - hence Collaborations

2)  SweetP - Boxed was originally 4 LPs (TB, HR, Ommadawn and a bonus LP - Collaborations).  The CD set has 3 CDs, with the tracks from Collaborations split among them - I have reassembled into one CD.

3)  Yes, I did like Tr3s Lunas - not in my top 10 - but enjoyable.

So, I decided to get Guitars "over with" - and of course I loved it

Next up will be L+S over the easter week-end

Then Heaven's Open - curious about that one

Followed by Collaborations

Then HR, an old favourite to finish

MOTS will intrude immediately when it arrives, and I can then move on to Killing Fields and Exposed when they arrive in the mail (I have heard the live TB is interesting).

You know I completely forgot about how good a song Heaven`s Open is untill Sweetpea mentioned it there.Remember hearing it on the radio before the album was released(Mike Read I think)and was blown away by it.Thought the album was something of a let down in the end and consequently it`s not one I`ve revisited too often.

I quite liked Music From The Balcony though myself.Always kind of considered it as a partial relative to Amarok in some ways.I can actually remember making a tape of the Amarok album for a friend of mine.Where I successfully managed to wedge it (in two parts of a c90)Between that imaginary part one to part two section of Amarok.Consequently my friend was none the wiser till he went out and bought it himself of course.."Where the hell`s that weird pseodo jazzy bit in the middle?"    :D

I`ve been listening back to Light and Shade quite a bit lately and really enjoying it.Think you may be in for quite an enjoyable Easter there trcanberra.

Hey Dirk, now that SweetP has made you a celebrity, thought I'd better reply  ;)

You were right, I really enjoyed L+S.  I was going to make it last two days, ended up listening all in one day as Matt suggested earlier in the thread - into my top 10 list.

:D Cheers trcanberra, hopefully the fame wont go to my head.

I listened to Light & Shade today actually whilst painting the staircase.Along with QE 2,Discovery,Music Of The Sphere`s,and Aerial by Kate Bush after talking about it elsewhere on here.Oh yeah and Superabundance by The Young Knives just to mix it up a bit.Heh heh it`s a big bloody staircase.

I don`t know if Tres Lunas 2 is still available to download online. But you must try and get hold of that sometime if you can. It`s kind of like the missing link between Tres Lunas and Light & Shade I suppose. It`s a collection of music directly taken from Mike`s game Tres Lunas and superbly put together by Musically Inspired.Mike reworked some of it for the L&S album on tracks like Ringscape and First Steps.Great stuff.

Should be a link for it on this forum somewhere if it still works!?

I think MusicallyInspired has a link to his site in his profile. You should be able to download Tr3s Lunas II from there.

Don't forget, too, the wonderful Return to the Origin by Marcus Junglas, which takes an alternative approach to the one Brandon took, and effectively produces a different kind of album from the same material. For a Tr3s Lunas devotee like myself, both are essential.

You can download it here.

Could`nt agree more Alan, both are essential.I keep promising myself to compile a playlist of all my favourite Tres Lunas/Light & Shade moments. But I either keep changing my mind about which tracks to miss out.Or I just become overwhelmed by the amount of Music Mike created for those projects.Praise be to the shuffle button IMO.

Thanks all - I now have Tr3s Lunas II - amazing stuff.  Will check out Return to the Origin as well (edit - is there a way to cut this into the pieces listed on the album liner?).

Is there anything similar from the later Maestro project, or is the music much the same?

Nero will let you put track markers into the CD burning process, though I haven't bothered to do it myself.

A lot of the music in Maestro (the game) is from TB2003, and there wasn't a great deal of new music written for it. Such new music as exists was put together by someone (who?) under a title something like 'Maestro Water Remix' - it's quite short (17 minutes), but it's certainly worth having.

Anyone know of a link to it that still works?

Later:

Ah, no, wait! There are two pieces available on Lyricless. This first one is the 17-minute version I'm thinking of:
Maestro Mix 2, by Oma.
I was baffled at first because Windows Media Player seems to think it's 34 minutes long, but actually it is only 17 minutes. Basically, Tony, this is what you're looking for.

There's also:
Maestro Water Remix by Miguel Samiez.
I thought at first this would be what I was searching for, but it isn't - it's a much more free development of some of the Maestro themes.

Thanks for all the info Alan - I'll check out those links.

edit - absolutely love the melody after the "are you still there?" in the Maestro Mix 2.

Will take a look (and listen) - many thanks - exploring the musty corners of the Oldfield output is great fun.

Guitars is the one Oldfield album I refuse to purchase, or even acknowledge its existence. There's bad, worse and then there's Guitars. I'm sorry. It's worse than Millenium Bell and THAT is an achievement.

I'd half agree with you. Both are not that good but i do occasionally listen to Guitars to see is i can find anything above average while the Millenium Bell i just can't get into at all as it does nothing for me.
At least Guitars got him out on tour (NEC '99 great gig),but neither are prime Oldfield by a country mile.  :/
