Most people consider connecting the guitar to a computer not the best idea... At least if You don't have a preamp.
Personally I'm using:
Chainer as a VST host
Amplitube as an effect and amp sim
I've also tried gxStack, but it seems a bit unstable for me...
Bear in mind that none of these software is free :/
Usually the biggest problem with PCs is the lack of ability to process the sound in realtime. If You don't own a soundcard which natively supports ASIO standard, You will face additional trouble... In my case (I've got SoundBlaster Live! ) i had to install "unofficial" drivers (see KX project) to enable ASIO support.

This doesn't seem like "easy to use", do it? But I'm afraid You won't find an "easy" adn strightforward solution which would give You satisfying sound quality.

Best regards

everybody is being so confusoing with this simple question! dont worry about using the above stuff, all you need to use is what I used to use -

your guitar
    \/
Preamp/effects/your actual amps headphone output
    \/
your pc's mic input via a 3.5mm jack to 1.5mm jack
    \/
software such as "Sonicfoundry's soundforge" is ideal for home recording

in short - i suggest soundforge, i was given it on a copied cd, *slaps back of hand* but i dont think its expensive, in fact some software can be downloaede for free such as "fruit loops"

You're right, but I assumed, that one don't own any of these (like myself, for instance), because if he does, there's no much reason to plug the guitar to the computer... If it is for recording only, not for DSP, I absolutely agree with You, and any free sound recording software will do.

I believe that the open source software 'audacity' allows basic multitracking, which might be one to take a look at. I'd personally suggest something a little more advanced if it's for anything more than just producing a basic recording, say for practise purposes. Of course, a lot is possible with a little imagination, but I'd think you'd ultimately find it frustrating to be trying to produce good sounding mixes with something which hasn't been properly designed for it.

For guitar sounds, I'd also recommend trying some of the amp simulation software which is currently available. There's a free version of Amplitube (Amplitube Uno) which offers just a single amp model, but seems usable. I didn't have much trouble getting a fairly Oldfield-esque sound from it (if that's the sort of thing you want) after a little experimentation.
I'd not personally recommend using the headphone/line output of a guitar amp to record distorted guitars with, unless you're going to process it afterwards, as I don't feel they ever give a terribly pleasing sound. Clean sounds recorded in that way can work, though, and you might even find the sound you get by recording distorted sounds like that is exactly what you want (I know that I've occasionally found that the sound from the headphone output of a super-cheap Marshall MS-1 mini stack is exactly what I was looking for...I'd not use it as a main sound though). I still find that my favourite method for my own lead guitar sound is recording the amp with a mic, but it really depends on the sound required.

amazarak, i guess your'r right, i dont have a preamp, i use (as i said) my marshall's built in stuff, because it has an emulated line out, what about yourself? do you use the software's effects?

oh and i got myslf a mixer there a while ago, i forgot to mention, the soundcraft "sprit notepad" has some of the best preamps ever! i used it on my new album and apart from some trouble I had with my pc soundcard, (alas, it was producing some humm), in the end it was sweet for home recording!

In fact I'm forced to use software, because I'm not a pro musician (i.e. I don't earn money with my music), and because of that, I couldn't afford buying a guitar amp or even dedicated preamp yet (this stuff is relatively expensive here, where I live). So, I've made some effort to make the guitar sound nice with the computer only (no preamps, effects and mixers between the guitar and computer). Of course, as Korgscrew mentions, it may not be the best solution, but I think it met my expectations. Very important thing when connecting to the computer is the quality of the cable, that connects the stuff directly to the line-in of the soundcard (mic-in is definitely not the best chioce, I think). I spent some more money on It, and the quality of the sound greatly increased. I also tried to adopt an old tube microphone preamp to use with guitar, but it produced more noise than directly connected guitar (but overriden, it sounded sweet indeed  :) ). As for software, I've tried amplitube and gxstack, and think, that with amplitube one may achieve quite nice sounds. It is also possible to exploit soundcard's built-in hardware DSP capabilities (SoundBlaster Live! and former models). If I found some time, I will post some sound which I got with my stuff, so You can listen to it.

Whew....

Managed to do some at last  ;)
It's not much, but it may give You some idea on what one can get with guitar and computer only... When I find some more time, I'll try to record some more pieces, and extend moonlight shadow :)

Love like a man - Ten Years after (Alvin Lee)

Moonlight shadow - Mike Odlfield. Now updated !!!

Taurus 2 - Mike Oldfield (don't worry - very small excerpt only :))

Zabic strach - Jan Borysewicz (very nice guitar piece by great polish guitarist and composer Jan Borysewicz)

If You're interested, my desktop looked like this during recording.

Have fun ;)

Forgot to mention - no postprocessing (cutting, mixing, etc.) except trimming and volume adjustment.
