In fact I'm forced to use software, because I'm not a pro musician (i.e. I don't earn money with my music), and because of that, I couldn't afford buying a guitar amp or even dedicated preamp yet (this stuff is relatively expensive here, where I live). So, I've made some effort to make the guitar sound nice with the computer only (no preamps, effects and mixers between the guitar and computer). Of course, as Korgscrew mentions, it may not be the best solution, but I think it met my expectations. Very important thing when connecting to the computer is the quality of the cable, that connects the stuff directly to the line-in of the soundcard (mic-in is definitely not the best chioce, I think). I spent some more money on It, and the quality of the sound greatly increased. I also tried to adopt an old tube microphone preamp to use with guitar, but it produced more noise than directly connected guitar (but overriden, it sounded sweet indeed ). As for software, I've tried amplitube and gxstack, and think, that with amplitube one may achieve quite nice sounds. It is also possible to exploit soundcard's built-in hardware DSP capabilities (SoundBlaster Live! and former models). If I found some time, I will post some sound which I got with my stuff, so You can listen to it.
