Hi, this is my first post here at the tubular.net forums. I registered nearly a year ago but I lost my information and just now realized I had it saved in my email.  :/
I would like to ask a question. I have several of Mike's albums, and I don't know what to get next. This may seem like a stupid question, but I think if there's anyone to ask, it's you guys.  :) I have a creeping fear: I've got all the good ones. Impossible. To give you an idea of my tastes, I'll list the ones I have, from my favorite to least favorite. Thanks in advance!  :)

1. Hergest Ridge/Ommadawn - I can't decide between these two. Ommadawn is probably stronger compositionally but Hergest Ridge just has something magical... brings out weird emotions in me.

2. Tubular Bells - This was the first album I ever bought by Mike. I didn't know what to think at first! But now I love it.

3. TSODE - Second album I bought. Completely different but also great.

4. Music of the Spheres - Also good but not my fav.

5. Tr3s Lunas - Pretty good, some good songs.

6. Light + Shade - Vocaloid really annoys me (I made a remix of Angelique without it and overdubbed a burning guitar solo by yours truly :p  ;).

7. Crises - Ugh.

8. Tubular Bells II - I can't stand it!!

Well, there you go. If you find time to reply to this I would really appreciate it. Other artists I like:

Philip Glass, Pink Floyd, Rush, Jethro Tull & Genesis.

Try Incantations. I think that one is your safest bet.

Yeah I agree with Sir Mustapha, plus if you like Philip Glass then Incantations is probably Mike`s most minimalist album.Besides which it`s also my favourite anyway,so I`m completely biased I guess. After that you must give Amarok a try imo.

I must say I`m a little surprised you don`t like Crisis,or at least the title track itself.Fair enough though we all have our own different likes and dislikes here that`s for sure. And always nice to see a new member, welcome aboard.    :)

Thanks so much for replying so quickly!  :)
I've heard about Incantations but I listened to some of the sound samples on Amazon and didn't care for it. But that's not a very good way to make a decision, especially with Mike's music.
Dirk Star, I might have to get Crises out and listen to it again. When I got it I was doing some odd jobs for a crazy woman and was in a horrible mood, so maybe that affected my judgement. I'll get back to you when I have.

Ditto on the Incantations. After that its a toss up between Discovery or Five Miles Out. Depending on your budget, I'd do Discovery before 5MO.

I'm also puzzled about you not liking Crises, be interesting to hear your view if you try listening to it again. How can anyone *not* like the second half of the title track (synth, then drums, rising and rising - fantastic stuff! ). Anyway, if you end up liking Crises a bit more the  Five Miles Out and Discovery will both be worth a listen.

Me, I absolutely love Amarok which I think is Mikes best work. However it is - ehm - quite weird and some people just don't get it!

Good luck with trying to find something to buy next, I certainly think there are a number of good (or even fantastic) albums not on your list!

p.s. welcome to tb.net  :)

Well, I've listened to Crisis again, and while it's still not my favorite, I have to admit parts of it are pretty good. The title track has some interesting sections, and I like the sound he was getting on the guitar. Does anyone else think Moonlight Shadow could have been better had it been played/recorded differently?
In High Places still annoys me, which is weird 'cause I love Yes.
Foreign Affair is my least favorite song on the album.
Taurus 3 is actually pretty good.
Shadow on the Wall... uh... I don't know why, but whenever I've heard Mike just do straightforward rock it just doesn't work. I dunno why.

Thanks to all of you for being so welcoming. :) It's so cool that there are other people who like MO. Nobody does where I live. My parents and friends can't stand him.
Heck, maybe I'll even give TBII another try.

Hi there Syd B.

I would place all 20.53 minutes of Crises in my top 5 favourites, and tracks 2,3,4,5 and 6 are pretty average in comparison IMO.

My top 3:

Ommadawn
Incantations
Hergest Ridge

Or:

Incantations
Hergest Ridge
Ommadawn

Or:

Hergest Ridge
Ommadawn
Incantations

Incantations indeed. Then possibly Amarok, Five Miles Out or QE2.

Hi Syd.Welcome.I'd say go buy Incantations NOW!

Regarding Amarok, buy it cos it is definatley up there with the 'Big 3' (TB,HR and Ommadawn)BUT......give yourself a few listens to get into it.Takes a while to get into it.Some people don't like it but the people that do like it go nuts for it.There's tons of threads on here to go through about it.

From those comments my guess would be you might enjoy Five Miles Out more than Discovery if you want to try one of those albums. FMO has more instrumental pieces which sounds like your preference. Discovery (apart from one shortish track The Lake) is songs along the lines of Moonlight Shadow / Shadow on the wall. I like most of them myself!

I haven't ever thought about the playing/recording of Moonlight Shadow in that way to be honest. I've always rather liked it!  Maybe you could start a thread over in the Crises forum to discuss and expand what you think could be improved?

I think you'll find there are a lot of people here in that sort of situation, me included!

Oh Hell's Bells, just go in chronological order. Platinum was released in the disco era, it has moments but hmmm....kinda dorky. There is a rarity I put here(if the Rapidshare link is still good) MO+Pekka Pahjola "Consequences of Indecisions". Just use the search function at Tubular dot net. Lots of good stuff out there. One member has about 10 versions of Ommadawn live, quite exciting. Have fun!

Yeah, I do like Mike's instrumentals better than his songs...

I will start a thread in the Crisis forum when I have time, and when I've completely thought through my comment about Moonlight Shadow. I'm not sure exactly what it is that I don't like about it, I just know that I liked it a lot better on the Night of the Proms performance.

Scatterplot, the computer I use has a very slow connection, but when I go to my band's rehearsal this week I will use the computer there to download the Consequences of Indecisions mp3.

incantations is surely one of Mike's most difficult "to get into" works yet is the most rewarding for those who make the effort.    It is my favourite for sure.
