After having read some of the opinions in the "difficult-to-play instruments" thread in this same forum, and after having seen Brian Wilson's great (IMHO) live renditions of the Smile and Pet Sounds albums, the following question occurred to me: what's the weirdest/strangest/craziest/most unusual musical instrument you've ever seen or heard played by anyone? For me it has definitely to be the Tannerin. The concertina comes closely second - I've seen accordions and bandoneons of all possible shapes, but I didn't think that an instrument having such a shape even existed. :)

P.S.: Instruments not producing actual musical notes, such as percussion instruments and all sorts of things being used as percussion :), shouldn't be kept into account.

There's a website at oddmusic.com that features some pretty weird & wonderful instruments.(Well, debatable as to whether they all qualify as such). There are a handful of musical instruments that can be called unusual but will probably be heard of by a fair amount of people, some fairly obscure or ancient/seldom known these days but the rest can only be described as something you'd have a hard time dreaming up.

Lots of sound clips can be sampled - some give the choice of warning you to prepare to hold onto your seat before listening(or words to that effect) :D

the weirdest instrument i've ever seen and heard is the theremin. first time i knew of it was in air's gig for '10000 hz legend' in la riviera, madrid.
it was a duo with theremin and guitar... just crazy!! the sound is incredible and so it is to watch the player moving hands over the wooden box with that sorts of aerial..

later i tried to find out about that weird instrument and it was here, in tubular.net, where i knew its name. then i could google a bit and was even more surprised when i learned it was invented at the beginning of last century by a physician and there's a whole world behind but at the same time is so unknown.. i guess the reason is that -for what i could see- it must be really difficult to play and maybe also that it's not easy to combine its sound with the traditional instruments.
i'd love to see someone playing it alive again. its sound is magic..

@ Maria: the Theremin is certainly weird, but as I said in another thread [and Holger may of course disagree with me as long as he wants!! :D] I consider it more a sound effects generator than a musical instrument. Instead, I think that its tuneful variation (a modern replica of which is known as Tannerin - see the link above) is the strangest musical instrument that ever existed.  ;)
