Just thought I'd ask what folks's biggest Mike-related gripes were.  Mine is that whenever I mention to people that Mike Oldfield released an album called "Incantations", someone always thinks it's that bloody album of Pan-pipe music.... Grrr!

My main gripe is that he has had 28 years in which to produce 28 albums on the level of "Incantations" (that's pretty reasonable, at an album a year! ). He's already 28 albums behind on this task!

Maybe it's not the biggest gripe, but I wonder why Mike doesn't use "normally" sounding electric guitarsalong with tubemps. OK, he has his own style, but You know, IMHO his sound is very artificial and gives me much less pleasure than traditional "warm" amp sound. I even think that this is one of the main reasons why Mike is not mentioned along with greatest guitarists of all time. When I once played 5MO to one of my friends who is a guitarists himself, his reaction was: "Wow, great music, but WHY A HECK THIS GUITAR SOUNDS LIKE FROM A POOR *.mid ???".
One of the reasons why I love 10th Anniversary performence are the guitars - sounding MUCH better than "usual Mike"

cheers

True. I love his signature guitar sound but for many people it totally ruins the whole experience! I have heard people calling it ugly many times and some even claim that his guitars hurt their ears. With different sounds, what would the music be like? We have heard many cover tracks, do they give us a hint of how Oldfield could sound like with more "normal" sounds? since sound is an important aspesct in making music, I find this very interesting.
cheers

What gets me the most is his collaborations with horrible singers that ruin a entire peice, like Five Miles Out or Shadow on the Wall. I do like Maggie Reilly however. :)

On "Five Miles Out" the song, aren't there just two "horrible singers": himself, and Maggie Reilly (whom you like)?

Sure are, Mike sang all the male vocal leads on that (superb) track, as far as I know anyway.

My biggest Mike gripe is that there seems to be a re-writing of musical history going on that just doesn't include him. Mojo magazine recently did an in depth 70's special issue where they went through and looked at all the big 70's players and all the 70's albums that 'really mattered' and as far as I could see anyway (I didn't buy the magazine but flicked through it in the shop) they didn't mention Mike at all. Its scandalous.

Looking at his career at the moment I just wish he had stuck to his artistic guns, or at least realised what they were in the first place, something which I'm not really sure he's always been aware of. He's always been a mass of contradictions and its there in his music I think.

"Gripe is an indoor sporting arena located in Split, Croatia. It features two halls. The seating capacity of the larger one is 6000. It is used for many sports, as well as concerts"

(From Wikipedia.com)

My english dictionary fails. What's a gripe?

There is some truth in that yes...
I wondered about the distortion bits of OUt of Sight/Mind from Guitars. His distortion sounds very different to that by other guitarists, much more produced in a way... I still like the tracks though

1)Mike as a singer,he did an ab fab job on Heaven's Open,I'd love to listen more of his singing talents(not that vocal performance like on Rite of Man,where he's singing with his normal voice)

2)He's not as popular as much prog rockers out there, even with his back catalogue which has got more to offer(especially the 70's long instrumentals + Amarok) than some other prog rock acts.

3)Being reconized as a guitar player than a multiinstrumentist in the very first place.Like some others said before, the problem is the sounds that comes from his guitars, which sounds not that natural at all for some guitar experts.

Ha..ha. Maybe they split coz they had a gripe against each other!

But seriously. My greatest gripe is that fans today seem to always gripe about Mike "losing it" and longing for the "good old days". True, he's had his good and bad albums but to me some of the good ones have also been recent ones and there are good ones all through his career.

My biggest gripe is that he is not sitting in my lounge right this minute serenading me on his guitar. :(
