Quote (HR lover @ June 30 2011, 01:24) | Ah yes, where would the world be if we didn't have Heidegger? But seriously what has philosophy given us that is actually knowledge we can use? If I have all the answers I wouldn't be a happier man. It's like the song of the band Living Colour: ignorance is bliss. |
The trouble is, HR, everyday life forces us into consideration of philosophical issues whether we like it or not. The recent thread about paid health services is one example. Another is the issue of how we should deal with criminals. According to CS Lewis in one of his essays, the rehabilitation view implies criminals are like deterministic machines that just need fixing, whereas the punishment view implies there is free will and we have genuine choices as to what we do. Until science is in a position to settle this and other issues, we have no choice but to enter into philosophical debate, even if it's usually called something else!
