I was just wondering when it was that Maggie Reilly 'left' Mike - in terms of recording with him? I think at one point during the mid-80s, collectively along with Morris Pert and Rick Fenn they were known as the Mike Oldfield group. And thinking that for me, Maggie was the best singer that Mike has ever used for recordings, I wondered why they parted company?

Was it because he wanted to bring Anita in due to their relationship outside of the studio? Perhaps coupled with the fact that Maggie wanted to 'make it' on her own?  :/

It seems it could have more reasons:

Quote
During Crises sessions, Maggie and her boyfriend were staying in an apartment under the studio in the garden of Mike's house in Denham. They didn't have to pay rent but they were at Mike's back and call. Whenever Mike wanted to record he just knocked on the door. Working in such a family atmosphere turned out to be effective. The international hit Moonlight Shadow reached number 4 in the UK charts and over the years has become a timeless evergreen. When Crises was completed, Maggie and Chrys moved to a 400-year-old romantic house in Hertfordshire, however, they had no time to enjoy their new home. Maggie went to Switzerland where Mike had bought a studio. They recorded another big hit - To France and spent following months on a tour.

The tour was very stressful and when it was over Maggie decided to take a rest. But a person with such a dynamic Scottish temperament is apparently not able to take a rest. Or not for a long time. During this time Maggie released her solo debut, a cover of Marianne Faithfull's classic As Tears Go By, married her long-time boyfriend Chrys Lindop and in 1985 gave birth to their son Fionnbharr, who means everything to her. A year later she appeared together with Mike and Simon Phillips on a charity concert in Royal Albert Hall where they performed an acoustic version of Moonlight Shadow. In 1989 Maggie sang Blue Night, a song Mike wrote especially for her.

Fionnbharr?????!!!

Dear, dear... The poor kid  :O
Think he'd even rather be called 'herbert'

But serieus, I like this little story, got some facts I didn't know. Also it's good that they had no argument.
What I heard (hope I understood it right) is that Mike wanted, in the nineties or 2000's, to record with her again, but that it was a problem because of record companies, and that they didn't let Maggie sing, because it was impossible because of contracts.

Thans for the info. EeToN - great find. I would love to hear Maggie record with Mike again, but it seems like it maybe wishful thinking on my part.

Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong but I think Fionnbharr is a Gaelic name, its not pronounced as it sounds.
Mike did indeed want Maggie to sing Man in the Rain on TB3 but her record company or manager either wouldn't allow it or thought it might be a bad idea, I can't remember the exact reasoning but it probably had something to do with money. She did sing on Earthmoving though remember.

Everyone's interpretation is different, and everyone has a right to that opinion. There is no "right" one, I am adding this post to communicate my thoughts to share them with like-minded souls who will be able to comment in good nature.
