Being fairly new to the site, I was wondering what the history was behind it all - how did the site get started and by whom?

Suffice to say, IMHO, it is the best MO fan site for news and information around! smile

Cheers,

I should think Olivier could tell you all...you'll just have to get his attention first...perhaps try knocking a bit harder wink

OK (and thanks), I'll do a 'about' page where I will try to summarize the evolution of the site. Quickly, from memory, since the beginning I wanted something dynamic that people want to check often, and I was inspired by http://www.macintouch.com/ a website I read everydays. I use the same style as this site in the text of the news (and I may add some English mistakes - I'm French.... So that's how the homepage with the news came, and I set up an articles section, a MIDI files section, a lyrics section, etc., with content stolen from other places on the web (otherwise the site would have been empty at the beginning).

Then, one or two years later, I decided to put the forums online, and I'm still a bit surprised they are successful and clean. Then (or was it before the forums), Marko contacted me and we quickly decided to publish some comic strips.

Then, Mike did his Then & Now tour, and visited the site (or it was his manager or girlfriend) and Mike's manager emailed me very nice and encouraging comments about it (and one email was co-signed by Mike!...). After the Berlin 2000 concert, I didn't get news from Mike's management anymore. Then, I linked the news page with the forums, so everybody can comment about the news in an organized way.

The site got more and more contributions, like the instruments listing, the tour listing, the Amarok analysis, the discography, etc. Some contributions are mirrors of other sites (some people asked for it, and for other ones, I asked them if I could mirror their stuff).

At the beginning, I had to search for news (my main source was the Amarok mailing list), now most of them are sent to me by fans. I didn't think the forums would work so well, compared to the other MO online communities, but I expected that fans will send news tips and rumors.

As I said, I will try to write an 'about' page, please let me know suggestions if you have some. I don't keep archives so it's not easy to remember the dates and the details.

Thanks Olivier (and Korgscrew!) for the information. I'm impressed! A lot of hard work went into the site and it's obvious the site is successful - one only has to view the rate of new postings on a daily basis to see that.

I'm fascinated by the views of others and the forums supply ample information to keep me happy. In fact, I will go as far to say that it is as a result of the forums that I have rediscovered many classic MO albums and uncovered many recordings that I either never knew existed or I couldn't get hold of - for this reason above any other, they are a tremendous success. They are also a source of both educational and entertaining debate, depending on which forum you plug into of course!! If only I had discovered the site sooner...

I realised before I posed the question that whoever started the site must have been dedicated in terms of time and research - without that it would have failed. So, thank you.

Often, we are all quick to criticise failure but we often don't celebrate success - please raise your glass and say 'Cheers' to Olivier'!

Cheers and thanks,

T4

PS I will give some thought to the 'about' page ;-)

Hi Olivier
Did "tubular.net" start with a first lonely page on the web named "Tubular Places" ?
If I remember well, in 1998-99 I think, I was looking for website talking about MO, and I found those "Tubular Places", linked by Pat. Your bg was orange or rose something like that.
I don't remember the date, but a few weeks-month later, you open tubular.net with the first look, and then replace "Tubular Places" by the actual link page.

Cheers

Ah yes, I forgot. At the very beginning it was a single page. I'm not sure it was orange. The URL was something like that: www.imaginet.fr/~lebra
I can't remember if it was a page with links or with other information.
Then I did Tubular Web, with a menu on the left, in a frame, and with the sub-sections. The colors were white, purple and black. After a while, I bought the domain tubular.net - I think it was the first Mike Oldfield website with a "nice" short URL.

When and why was the name changed from Tubular Web to tubular.net? I know it always had the tubular.net URL, but back in my archangelic days the site was still called Tubular Web, wasn't it?

And yeah, great work Olivier, thanks a lot!

I agree: very good job you did here! Sites like this are giving the internet a great value!

It's nice that these things can be mentioned now and then! Congratulations!

A fact that should be pointed up is that Olivier uses his pocket money to make this fantastic site live, and it sure does cost.

There is a paypal link on the main page, dear shareholders :)

I remember the "early stages" of this website. Didn't you have a photo of Mike with guitar during the Exposed tour as a background with a "cut-out" filter over it Olivier?

I would like to add my praise here too. I was looking around MO sites some years ago and came to the conclusion that this was THE english speaking site with the most info (and best ordered info). I look in one a day AT LEAST , unless i'm overseas.

Like has been said above, there is GREAT value in a site like this - I have been inspired to get videos, music that I would otherwise not have known about and listen to interviews etc.. that I could only have known of from here. I can remember the early 80s in England finding it very hard to get much at all about Mike and the fan club info came in stops and starts.

Well done Olivier (not forgetting Korgscrew)

BTW - why was MI's post totally wiped away? He always writes good stuff doesn't he?

This seems to be the right place to ask this.

So the administrators hierarchy is like 1)Olivier 2)Korgscrew, right? Did Korgie join later? Was it like: 'I know great deal about music and MO, make me moderator!'

Just a bit curious... ;)
