I have the majority of Mike's albums. I don't have Earth Moving, Heavens Open, Millenium Bell, Tres Lunas, Killing Fields, TB 2003 or Complete 1985 Version. I was wondering which albums the wise sages on these forums would get in order of preference. Also does anyone know why some versions of complete are missing William Tell & Cuckoo Song?

Many thanks

Wouldn't class myself a wise sage at all but I think your next album purchase kinda depends on your favorites of what you already have.

If you love the original TB then TB2003 is very interesting to listen to. Nothing really new to listen to however so not necessarily the first one to get.

If you like Mikes "Dance" stuff like TBIII then Millenium Bell or Tres Lunas could be for you. Not that keen on either of them myself so I'll let others do the recommending there.

If you like Mikes songs (like the Discovery album) then Earth Moving or Heavens Open should be next. I'd suggest Earth moving first though I imagine others might suggest Heavens open as it has a bizarre instrumental track called "Music from the Balcony" which some people love (I don't like it but know that others do so it must have something going for it).

Killing Fields is a bit of an odd one and personally I'd leave that until last.

If I already had the others and was replacing lost CDs, the order I'd get them would be:
Earth Moving
TB 2003
Heavens Open
Tres Lunas
Millenium Bell
Killing Fields

2c worth...

IMO you have all the really good ones already!

You should own Killing Fields because it's an interesting dark instrumental album and it has a few classic Oldfield moments.

Earth Moving and Heaven's Open are OK albums if you like the Discovery/Islands era. But they're not essential.

The other albums you mention is in the "new" style, which I have a hard time listening to. Mike did an 180 degree turn stylistically. Some like it, but I don't. I advise you to "try before buy"!

Those ones you haven't got are the somewhat weaker albums maybe. I agree with Lars. So you don't need to hurry to buy them  :p

But Killing Fields is indeed essential in my view. It won't disappoint. I think.

Heavens open: not bad, and it's got Mike singing. reason enough to buy it.

Earth Moving: If you're open to 80's pop songs, you might even like it. I don't mind it.

Millenium Shite: Don't bother  ;)

Tres Lunas: I suppose you got Light and Shade: this is in the same style. only L&S is a little better, but some (like AlanD) might disagree  ;)  :D

(Secretly dropping stinkbomb behind Piltdown ...)

I can't get beyond thinking, now, that L&S is mostly vacuous technopap. The more I listened to it, the less I found.

By contrast, what you think of Tr3s Lunas depends enormously on whether you've played the game much. If you have, and if it touched your soul, then the Tr3s Lunas album will probably become one of your favourites. If not, I guess it will probably seem mediocre.

Hi,

Funny how we can all like Mike's stuff but be quite different in choice.

I'd personally go with Millenium Bell first- consider when it was made when listening and it makes sense.
Then either Heavens Open or Earth Moving.

You've heard the original TB before.

If you get Killing Fields I think it is worth seeing the film too as it puts the music in context. Do others agree?

Agree with Clotty about Killing fields. It is a film soundtrack not just an album and should be considered as such.

Same, to some extent, has to be said for Tres Lunas, it is an album accompanying MusicVR and to appreciate it you really have to consider it in context (by buying and playing MusicVR if you haven't already). Personally, I prefer firing up MusicVR to putting the Tres Lunas CD on...
