Ok so we've all had our say about the 2009 remix of TB.Some of us love it,some of us hate it and some of us have a foot in both camps.I'm pretty much in the latter.I'm a bit pissed that he didn't use the phasing effects on the Bass bit and he's chopped off a large chunk of the Sailors Hornpipe and other gripes but the Caveman gets to be a bit louder and a few more Caveman grunts is never a bad thing IMO (read into that whatever you wish).
My question to you good folks is this.......Short of sticking all the versions of Tubular Bells in a big box and calling the Ultimate Ultimate Tubular Bells which are your favourite releases to bare that famous knackered bell cover.
As a guide TMB would count but the 1972 mix shouldn't really be counted as it's not that easy to get and a lot of us don't have it (yet). The same for any Quad versions. All the reMASTERED versions would count as one cos the actual mix is the same. And for the purposes of this OTB would be valid as it is in the Oldfield catalogue.
To kick off mine would be:

1)TB 1973 (natch)
2)TB Boxed
3)Exposed TB
4)TB 2009 mix
5)OTB
6)TBII
7)TBIII
8)TB 2003
9)TMB

If this has been done before i apologise but with all that's been said recently now seems a good time to look at this.

There are only 3 Tubular Bells in my life.

01. The original 1973 mix.
02. The 1993 remake called Tubular Bells 2
03. The live sections on Airborn ... very rocking version.

Tubular Bells II is tops.

TMB doesn't count IMO. It has the word 'Bell' in it, but musically I don't hear any resemblance or relationship with Tubular Bells. TMB stands like a castle, on an island of it's own with solid walls and a moat around it. TB can't penetrate it's walls  - TMB is too unique.

Original 1973 Tubular Bells fore me  , also love the spoken "Sailors Hornpipe" from Boxed.  I've the Quad TB, but I don't know if that's any different, apart from the model gliders being flown at the end. I've got a turntable, but need a phono stage to play my vinyl , as my amp doesn't have a turntable option.
My next favourite Tubular Bells is III.  About the '09 remixes I haven't got the money to go out and spend on the box set, so I haven't heard it. Is there any major differences.   Maybe a remaster of the '73 original would be the best way to go to iron out any minor sound innaccuracies, and reduce the "hiss" , not that I notice any tape hiss. I say if it ain't broke don't fix it, for all the "flaws"  on TB'73 I don't notice them, I just hear beautiful music  :)  :D . Re TB 2003, what was that all about :/ ??? , I do sort of like it, but when it comes to  playing TB I find myself reaching for the '73 version.  As regards live versions then "Exposed", and also the Second House performance.

Well said, Wiga and Ugo! Of course, both Amarok and "The Wind Chimes" have moments which, if heard in isolation, you could be persuaded to believe came from the TB series.

1. Tubular Bells (original 1973 version)
2. ...

... hmm...

Actually, let me redo that:

1. Tubular Bells (original 1973 version)

As far as TB1, the 2009 remix is the one I will cue up from now on, when I need to get my TB1 ya-ya's out. As far as the best "sequel" TB2 is the best, except for parts of TB3 "Top of the Morning", etc. I seem to be in that bottom percentile who thinks TB 2009 is the best version of TB1. Oh well.....

Can somebody tell me what TB3 has to do with TB1 or 2?

Because, apart from some little parts, I don't get it.

Dazzler - you know the crescendo moment on TB3, when the bass tune from TB is superimposed with the screaming guitar -  WHOA  - that's no little part to me, that's a blow your mind big moment.  :O

I don't get it.

No, you're only allowed to say that about Amarok!

Seriously, though... There's pretty obviously a progression, such that TB3 is(intentionally) about twice as far removed from TB as TB2 was. The caveman bit, for example, is now just a fading scream of the demon that has been cast out, as it falls into some abyss (or off the top of Mike's mountain). TB4, presumably, would be hardly recognizable as TB at all.

For me:

1. The original TB 1973, first and foremost
2. TB2 - a well-crafted masterpiece, smoothly updated to reflect improvements in sound technology

The 2009 mix is growing on me too!

I will give TB3 another listen soon.

But I remember that I could find as many links
to Crises than to the original Tubular Bells.

Taurus 3 anger in the caveman section ... if I'm right.
The Man in the Rain - Moonlight Shadow connection ofcourse.

@Dazzler.There's an awfully familiar bass riff behind Far Above The Clouds don't you think?

And yes there are plenty of references in Crises (and the first moments of the track FMO as well if you really listen)but it's not called TB.

Personally i agree about TMB baring sod all resemblance to any of the other TB's but since a hell of a lot of people like it,and since it has the all important Bell on the cover then it ought to be here.As is well known i'm not a fan but it has it's place in the 'TB family'.
