Thea Cochrane Group: Musicians Posts: 445 Joined: Nov. 1999 Posted: Aug. 12 2002, 07:53 I think TL is the first album where Mike has used white noise as a basis for percussion - especially on Sirius (my favourite track on the album). The kind of sound used is oddly similar to the snare sound from a Casio VL1 - an early synth that looked like a toy and had a built in calculator. Apparently it can still sound nice if you put it through effects though. I've got samples of it, but have never played with the real thing. It's a bit of an assumption to say that Mike must be using a VL1, though, as white noise can be generated and shaped using most wave editing software these days. Back to top

It's the quality and speed of the envelope generators that mostly determine the usability of a synth for making percussion sounds. Back to top

I've realised that some of what I thought was filtered noise, could actually be sampled breathing (most obvious on the Turtle Island intro). Noise through a rhythmically chopping gate, phaser and delay on Sirius is interesting. Back to top

Noise does form the basis for a lot of synthesised percussion sounds, of course...not sure I'd personally say that noise generation was a feature I'd expect from a synth, though - there are an awful lot which don't do it.
