Whilst driving through  Sudbury the other day, I found myself behind a rather dirty looking white van. Instead of the usual "clean me" or "also available in white" comment, there was this interesting piece of text, very neatly written. After reading it I realised I knew it. It was this,

"Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun"

Pink Floyd ofcourse

And I thought wow that really means something to me, because I am of a certain age !!!;) and someone was bothered enough to write it and then I thought wouldn't it be good to see a song of Mike's up there for all to see. Which one would you choose?

Hey Bee, another Floyd fan i guess. Chuffed someone knew my signature.  :) For those who dont, it is Breathe (reprise). Bee, Floyds "Time" is one of my favourite tracks by anyone, fantastic lyrics as you have rightly identified. You must have a different class of "white van man" in Sudbury. What about "wish my wife was as dirty as this" thats a common one in Leeds.    :D

As for a Mike track on the back of a white van? what about that TSODE classic "let there be white"

What about this gem from Mike about washing vans???

"All she saw was the sillouette of a van
far away on the brighter side
it was washed six times by a man and and his wife
but the colour just never shone through"

Well Bee " The time is gone the song is over, thought i`d something more to say"

:)  :)

Great stuff, Ratty! I actually would like  to see "On Horseback", coz I absolutely love Mike's voice and the sentiment behind the song. And life really is too frantic right now, we should all stop trying to be so fast at everything.

Yes, I love Pink Floyd. Their music is meaning more and more to me now as the years go by. Grantchester Meadows is a beautiful place and their lyrics are sublime. Even Relics has a depth I never fully appreciated. Nothing can beat Dark Side of the Moon, except Tubular Bells ~ pure genius for me.

Have you thought any more about the iPod? Just go and get one.! I promise you will not be disappointed! I'm listening to Tubular Bells right now. You will love it because it is so easy to use. And so personal to you. Couldn't tell you how it works though!!

(foreign affair)

Dirty white van
Take a trip with a man
Scrawled with lyrics from "Time"
Pink Floyd written in grime

It's well-worn territory
On a dirty old lorry...

(and also Yes)

I see "Pink Floyd" on a white van
Writ in the dirt with a white line
Take all your lyrics
And you throw them away
Floyd on a white van...

Im gonna get one Bee, you`ve inspired me, not sure how you download tho, but i know a (white van) man who does. You`re right about listening to music as you get older, how it means more, you never focus on the lyrics when you are younger (well i was usually too drunk or high!!;) Marillion were one of my all time fav groups, Fish was the ultimate lyricist and i never appreciated him either.

1st three MP3 albums.

Ommadawn
The Final Cut
Script For A Jesters Tear.

So far, "Misplaced Childhood" is my favorite Marillion. Fish's first solo is rather excellent as well.

I have to confess to only have listened to Script for a Jesters Tear, and that was yonks ago. I was interested but was more into Mike Somebody or other at the time! Must dig it out again. I loved the cover I remember. How I miss album covers. And  that's another subject altogether!!

the Fish and Hogarth Marillion's are like two different bands: it is hard to find similarities. Usually, when bands change, it is more gradual, even if a dominating lead singer leaves.

Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors is quite fantastic. A gentlemens excuse me is one hell of a track. That was the problem though, after they had singles success the band wanted to continue the shorter catchy singles type work wheras Fish wanted to continue along the prog rock theme. I know what you mean about the transition from Fish to Hogarth and the style changing. However, how i looked at is was..if i had heard Marillion with Hogarth as a brand new group on the scene, id have still loved the music. Mike actually appeared on stage with Marillion as a special guest and Fish was supposed to appear on Earth Moving, he even recorded vocals but they were not used. He is still mentioned in the credits tho.

Bee - dig it out and play it. Great cover, excellent album.
