Can anyone please help settle a dispute between myself and a friend? Who wrote Moonlight Shadow.  I've always believed
that  Mike was the  SOLE composer of Moonlight Shadow.  My friend however reckons that Cat Stevens is the true composer of MS    :/ .  I maintain that Moonlight Shadow is ALL Mike's own work.
This has been bugging me  all day, since Monday in fact I'm unable to sleep until I've posted my question. Thanks for your help from a very tired Moonchildhippy
 .

Perhaps your friend is getting mixed up with the Cat Stevens song 'Moonshadow'. I've certainly never of any link between Cat Stevens and Moonlight Shadow.

Show your friend the Crises cover/booklet - there, it can be seen "Music & Lyrics: Mike Oldfield". No Cat Stevens, there's never been any connection between him and Mike at all. If your friend still maintains that Cat Stevens wrote it, ask to see some proof...who knows, perhaps Mike has been lying all these years, and he didn't write it at all, but somehow, I think someone would have said by now... ;)

Oops!! I've just realised I've left an "of" in the title where there shouldn't be one. Not the best example that an Englishwoman, should be showing to TubularBoarders, who don't speak English as their first language.  I can't seem to edit the error :O .
Lucky I can! Korgscrew

Anyway back to the  topic subject.

Thanks Raven and Korgscrew for settling the debate.  I think this is where my friend got confused, Cat Stevens wrote a song titled Moonshadow. As I've always maintained Mike is the SOLE composer of Moonlight Shadow.  If however it turns out Moonlight Shadow was "stolen", then I'm sure some 21/22 years on,  something would have been said, by now, and possibly Cat Stevens would make a claim for royalties due to him.  On my CD's/ DVD's Moonlight Shadow is  solely credited as Mike Oldfield   :) .

When my Dad first heard Moonlight Shadow, he declared it to be a steal from Cat Stevens' Moonshadow.  I guess the older song may have been in Mike's subconscious when he wrote Moonlight Shadow.

Hmmm...due to the similarity of names? To me, the songs have little resemblance except the words "moon" and "shadow."  There's "Mr. Moonlight" which mentions praying, IIR.  What about "Moonlight Sonata?" Right number of syllables.  All of those could have been a subconscious influence, if any at all (which I am challenged to believe).  It's not like George Harrison with "My Sweet Lord" that was subconsciously influenced by "He's so Fine."

Not that this has any baring on "Moonlight Shadow," but there are all those lunar dancing songs (as I type this, I think how fun it would have been to see the astronauts dance on the moon, hehe). "Moondance." "Dancing in the Moonlight." And then, David Bowie's Serious Moonlight Tour, based on the lyrics of "Let's Dance."

Besides...didn't Mike indicate he really doesn't listen to very much music?  Dunno when he started not listening to music, but maybe he never heard "Moonshadow."

Guess the best thing to do would be to ask Mike.  If when asked about "Moonshadow" he says, "Huh? What's that?" with a confused look on his face or emoticon, you'd have your answer.  :)

I too am puzzled as to why your Dad thought that. I can't hear any similiarity between the two: certainly not in melody or style, nor in lyrics from what I can remember.

Yes but maybe he therefore remembers those music he really listens to much better than otherwise.

Well they've both got "moon" and "shadow" in there!

;)

If that's the best reason you can come up with then you don't have a very solid arguement.  :)  ;)

Hey - it wasn't my argument!  The last time I agreed with my Dad about music was September 1971 or so.  ;)

Perhaps that's the connection between Mike and Cat Stevens,  both their songs have both "moon and "shadow" in the title, except
Mike included "light" between moon and shadow  :).

Does anyone know a link , where I can hear the Cat Stevens song, as I'm not familiar with it.  I tried the HMV shop website,as that allows you to hear snippets of music before you buy, for some reason I couldn't get it to work    :/ .

Well, it seems that with MS Mike managed to increase the number of people who know Cat Stevens. ;)

Back in 198? my friends at school tried to convince me that Mark Knopfler was responsible for the guitar soloing in Moonlight Shadow. They couldn't believe that Mike Oldfield could play just as well (even better in my opinion! )

I thought Al Gore invented Moonlight Shadow.

David Bowie's Serious Moonlight Tour, based on the lyrics of "Let's Dance."

That's probably the only rock concert I've seen, and I had to leave the country to see it.

The lyrics of "Moonshadow" actually relate the song to Mike's "Gimme Back" from "Heaven's Open": body parts being lost.

Cat Stevens seems more resigned that Mike, though, about his losses. :) See here. ;)

There is obviously no connection whatsoever between the two songs, your friend is just a little confused.
