Okay, this came to me while I was writing an answer to another post. So the question is, Ahhem!:

What historical figure does Mike remind you of and why?

Answers in a post please. The winner is the one who wins.

Quasimodo

Well, Mike is not an ugly hunchback, and he does not live in French church and pour molten metal on angry townsfolk. As far as I know, he is not in love with a Gypsy. But, aside from these major differences, he does love to ring large bells!

I'd like to think of Mike as a reincarnation of some great classical composer. But as there are none who did all the styles he did and continues doing, I'd say Shakespeare. ;)

Well, it's easy to imagine him shaking his head ruefully and sayng: "The bells! The bells!"  :D

How could he possibly be a reincarnation of anyone other than JESUS CHRIST. I have associated Mike with that look for so long I don't think I could come up with any other possibility except for maybe Aragorn from LOTR.

If I wanted to be slightly different from Richards answer I guess I could say JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR Do you think you're what they say you are?

Hmmmm... Aragorn is cool and in control. Mike is more a tortured soul, don't you think? :)

Yes I could see Mike as Aragorn in LOTR   :D  ;).

Tourtured soul, well, yes, certainally in the Tubular Bells- Ommadawn era  , but also GENIUS SURVIVOR too  :) .  Not that I like to see anyone suffer for his or her art.

Actually, he's more like Strider than Aragorn - reclusive, dark, mysterious.  I would love to see him blossom into Aragorn, however.

How about Gollum as a famous historic figure?

To those who like "Light and Shade", he's a Slinker, with those well-crafted tunes slinking into your mind. To those who hate "Light and Shade", he's a Stinker. The obsession with the Ring is as plain as day on the cover art.

"my preciouss preciouss bellsss...."

Let's not turn this in to ANOTHER Light + Shade discussion

I think he is like Chewbacca, in the way that he says barely anything but works very hard and does the best he can  :)

Gollum though, is a good one, precious. :D

I think a younger mike look's like the next Dr Who, David Tennant. I even say he look's like him in a photo in the sleeve notes of L and S.

You might be right. He sings in his native Wookiee voice on "Piltdown Man" in "Tubular Bells"

I think I'm the only one who took this topic as serious when it very obviously isn't. :D However:

@ Ian Too (by the way, do I know you?): I said Shakespeare because he wrote some of the greatest tragedies but also some of the bawdiest comedies in the English literature, and he always created masterpieces. Mike is like him, in that he went from the greatest heights (Amarok) down to the bottom-most gutter level [Earth Moving :D] and always managed to create something very, very, very good. :)

@ Hiawatha: as far as I know, Wookies don't articulate any words. The Piltdown Man does - he says "Flogo graph dough wenugwah" etc. :D
