OK, there are many postings referencing Mike's work with other artists in the past. But who would you like to see Mike collaborate with in the future (someone who he has not worked with before)?

I would love to hear a Rick Wakeman/Mike Oldfield composition with Rick on keys (obviously) and Mike doing the rest!

Any more?

I'll bite!
Possibly Peter Gabriel, Enigma, Ashley MacIsaac! (for all you Cape Breton fiddle festival freaks), Nusrat Feteh Ali Khan (those soaring vocals) or, ideally, Mickey Hart of Planet Drum. A live show with the latter would have all my mates out of hiding and dusting off their paraphernalia, if yer catchin' my cold.

Well if Mike was stuck for some good lyrics,he should give Mark Knopfler a call, and i would love to hear these two play guitar together.

i think a brilliant collabouration would be with Gordon Giltrap. The styles would work.
(Any Oldfield fan would probably like giltraps work, early stuff esspecially)

I would difinately love Rick Wakeman to work with Mike, but here are some others:
Moby: Briliant multi-instrumentalist who writes in many different styles (like Mike!) he is really cool and I would like to hear the result of a collaberation.

Yes: This band included Rick Wakeman and Jon Anderson, and is very cool. Lots of very long songs with wierd vocals which don't make sence.

The Moody Blues: Very nice songs. This is on old group that are still going, and it would be interesting to see what would happen if they met Mike.

If I can, I'll think of more soon.

Didn't expect to see mention of Gordon Giltrap...very pleasantly suprised smile. I listened to one of his albums a while ago, called 'Perilous Journey' I think, and liked what I heard...might have to dig the LP out again and have another listen to it.

Peter Gabriel and Mike Oldfield could be an interesting collaboration (as a fan of both, I'd like to say that)...and then again it might not be. I've been listening recently to Jools Holland's 'Small World Big Band' album (released here in Oz as 'Jools Holland's Big Band Rhythm and Blues' or something like that), which is basically a whole album of different collaborations (quite a few on cover versions of songs by the likes of Screaming Jay Hawkins, Louis Armstrong, Willie Dixon etc). Some of them work really well, some of them are fine, and some don't really work. It's an interesting listen though.

I suppose we're now down to just one artist we'd like to work with Mike because the plans for the 'Super Albums' series fell through? wink

Interesting...Yes, would be particularly fascinating with MO adding his unique sound, and quite exciting as they remain my favourite rock group!

Trading licks with Mark Knopfler would be fab and could lead to a series of dual guitar albums, sort of a 'dualing banjos' series... biggrin I would love to see him do similar with Steve Howe, Steve Hackett and Dave Gilmour for starters - I'm sure they would whet the buying public's interest!

As for Gordon Giltrap - ok - confession time. I'm not familiar with ANY of his music. I'm familiar with the name but I guess one can't afford to get into absolutely everthing. However, it sounds as though he may be worth a listen, so I'm gonna go for it!

I can imagine Peter Gabriel's vocal style complimenting Mike's music very well indeed. Equally, Mike's guitar would supplement Pete's music so we can but dream!! Pete's worked with minimalist and new age artists before (amongst others), e.g. Laurie Anderson, so you never know - anything could happen.

Others that have sprung to mind since my original post include Enya and Neil Morse (Spocks Beard, Transatlantic) - fingers crossed!

OK, this is a long shot, but fans in the UK may be familiar with one piece by Giltrap- if I remember correctly, one piece (I think from 'Perilous Journey') was used as the theme tune for the BBC program 'Holiday' (once hosted by Jill Dando). Of course, this may just be my memory playing tricks on me.

T4's probably right about Peter Gabriel complimenting Mike's style well, because of his ability to work with a variety of musical styles. And he's still at his best, judging from his vocals on the Afro Celt Sound System's 'When You're Falling' (released last year)- plus rumours of a new album this year (rumours which seem to have existed for the past x years).

I know the TV programme that you're thinking of... if that's Giltrap then I'm impressed! I've always liked that music - just never knew who it was redface

Very similar in style to another favourite artist of mine - Stephen Caudel ('Wine Dark Sea'). An Oldfield/Caudel collaboration would work well - both very talented multi-instrumentalists, the results could be breathtaking...

I'm not sure if i want to see him work with anyone else. i've enjoyed his major works by himself, and i'm not sure if i've heard anything that he has collaberated with anyone with (except for vocals like MITR, Moonlight shadow, etc...).

so i think that if he was to make a fully instrumental album split 50/50 with someone it could lead to dissappointment.

i think i prefer to have people remix his music (BT, Jam & Spoon, etc...) than him work w/ them (this way you get two versions, not one smile)

I appreciate what you're saying Tubularbills. I just think that, IMHO, Mike's most recent works have been a little unfocused and stale - they still remain better than most though!!

By working with others, it shares the pressure and load - I still think that Mike tries hard to emulate the success of 1973/1974 - hence more Bells albums! Sharing ideas with other artists could unlock another gear in MO, that would otherwise remain untapped. You never know....

Cheers,

T4

I don't think Mike is trying to emulate 1973/1974,because he has said himself that he no longer tries to be the best, best instead just do what pleases him,and if everyone else likes it,then great. The other thing is,Mike has always been a loner as far as making music is concerned, and he likes it that way,so,i don't think we will ever see or hear him playing with the people mentioned above, which is a shame.

i opened this thread with the intent of suggesting Peter Gabriel...but I see I am not alone in this thought smile...the power of mike's music and the power of peter's voice would create something truely wonderous...let us hope it is possible in the future...

Strange that no-one so far mentioned the AfroCeltSoundSystem as a possible partner for cooperation. I think it would make a perfect blend...

In response to jael's comment about the Afro Celts...

I'm not sure myself whether Mike and the Afro Celts would be a good mix- the collaborations with Peter Gabriel, Robert Plant and Sinead O'Connor worked, but they were collaborations with vocalists (and a bit of keyboards from PG). Personally, I'm not sure that the Afro Celt style of music would lend itself to Mike's guitar, for example (I'm sure that Mike as a guest vocalist would not be an option). Although I am only familar with the second and third albums of the Afro Celts. As for using Afro Celt musicians as backing musicians on some of Mike's work, I dunno, maybe. And then again, maybe not.

Tim, it's like this. I imagined Mike to do his thing, just as he did on Downwind.
The combination of a rhythm by Simon Emmerson, vocals by Iarla O Lionaird and Mike on guitar(as in LARGE solo)...I think it would work.

It'll never happen, of course - what with many involved having an ego the size of Mt. Everest (or bigger smile ). But, anyway ...

Moby, Gabriel, TanDream (well, you could hope), Enya, Sting, Marillion (yes, really ... go listen to their recent stuff)

And some of the old fav's - esp. Maggie Reilly.
