What on earth is a "Wonga Box," as played on Amarok?

I think it's simply a wooden box being hit by fingertips with thimbles on. :) An Italian percussionist some time ago had such a box, and when asked its name, he said it was called "Wonga" and that it came from Africa.

That's interesting to know - I've not come across any information before on what it might be. One possibility I'd considered was that it's actually a money box (wonga is a British slang term for money), which would be quite an amarok-like thing to have, but the wooden box theory makes sense.

Any idea where it's played in the song?

It depends on what it really is. ;) If it's a wooden box, according to what I think, then it's the ticking percussive sound heard in various places (e.g. right after the Intermission). If, according to what Korgscrew thinks, it's a money box, it may be one of the mechanical-sounding items in the 'Mad Bits". ;)

I was wondering if a wonga box would have been something filled with chocolate.

I had it pictured as a jack-in-the-box  :D

"Life is like a box of wonka".

Apart from Willy Wonka and his magical chocolates :D, and despite Korgscrew's suggestion above that it may be British slang, "wonga" still resonates to my ears as something African - just like Karl Jenkins' invented words in the Songs of Sanctuary album. ;) So maybe that Italian guy I mentioned above was right. :)
