A few years ago here we had a thread, where everyone contributed, from time to time, phrases or sayings that were amusing, wise, inspiring, or just plain daft. It seemed to be popular for a while and there was always something new. It was interesting to see that even across countries, continents and cultures a lot of them meant the same thing...but then we are all human after all I guess!

They could be cryptic or absolute nonsense (I have tried to find the old thread because it would be good to start again, but it has evaded me.)  So if Ok with everyone, here's another go....

First of all I really like Wiga's signature phrase, so simple and true

~the best things in life are not things

just wonderful that, I think!!

~only left-handed people are in their right minds

~happiness is made up of a million tiny things that often go unnoticed

~Everything that happens happens as it should, and if you observe carefully, you will find this to be so. (Marcus Aurelius)

~He who lives in Harmony with himself, lives in harmony with the universe ( MA again ) ...and a tenuous link here for Mike's music of the spheres

~Judge a man by the questions he asks, not by the answers he gives

~simplicity is the ultimate sophistication

- He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you. (Nietzsche)

May I be silly? :D

"Just a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down" (Richard Sherman). :D If you think of it carefully, it's very less silly than it appears at first glance.

Actually, I don't think I'd much enjoy swallowing a spoonful of sugar!   I know Wiga would prefer swallowing a spoonful of salt!

I like these words of wisdom from John Cleese: "How do you get God to laugh? Tell him your plans."

Perhaps the Nietzsche quote was a bit too serious. Here:

Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.

not at all. it's good to get a broad spectrum of thought
:)

I also like, by him,

~There is always some madness in love, But there is always some reason in madness. ( how very true )

~Anyone who has never made a mistake, has never tried anything new ( Einstein )

~The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched - they must be felt in the heart.

~Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines ( that may have been said before in the old thread, but I cannot remember who said it, so sorry if it was you )

~I don't have to attend every argument I am invited to

If it works don't fix it.

If it doesn't fit make it fit.

Why don't you slip into something more comfortable.

Like a coma  :O .

The universe began with a word. But which came first: the word or the thought behind the word? You can't create language without thought, and you can't conceive a thought without language, so which created the other, and thus created the universe?

The trouble with being infallible is that you have to deal with everyone else making mistakes.

We are star stuff. We are the universe made manifest trying to figure itself out.

If I take a lamp and shine it toward the wall, a bright spot will appear on the wall. The lamp is our search for truth, for understanding. Too often we assume that the light on the wall is God. But the light is not the goal of the search; it is the result of the search. The more intense the search, the brighter the light on the wall. The brighter the light on the wall, the greater the sense of revelation upon seeing it! Similarly, someone who does not search, who does not bring a lantern with him, sees nothing. What we perceive as God, is the byproduct of our search for God. It may simply be an appreciation of the light, pure and unblemished, not understanding that it comes from us. Sometimes we stand in front of the light and assume that we are the center of the universe. God looks astonishingly like we do! Or we turn to look at our shadow, and assume that all is darkness. If we allow ourselves to get in the way, we defeat the purpose; which is to use the light of our search to illuminate the wall in all its beauty - and in all its flaws. And in so doing better understand the world around us.

So beautiful

the lamp idea..I really like this, but I keep wondering what is the 'energy' powering the light and what fuels that? Our curiosity or our consciousness maybe

And the thought/word idea fascinates me.  I keep trying to work out what I'm doing when I'm thinking, because I don't think in words and when I try to voice my thoughts the intended meaning is always just slightly off if you know what I mean. And if I write words, when I read them back later, they are even further away from my original thought. That must be something to do with the time delay in getting the thought down on paper. That's why I draw, for me it says it better and is more directly linked to my mind.

There were these two characters in Norse Mythology called Huginn and Muninn that I remember from somewhere...found this in Wiki....it says it better than I can

Bee - I don't think I think in words either. But I express myself much better face to face than writing down in words.

Sometimes I have to re-read stuff I write on here - so that I'm being as I talk.
