I was so surprised to hear Tubular Bells playing on x-factor last night that I assumed it was my phone and went to the other room to answer it.  :)

yes i heard it too. Not that uncommon to hear TB being used as background music, it is widely used on tv progs... shame it's about the only widely used MO track considering how his instrumental music is perfect for underscores to shows...

All the contestants sitting around in Italy looking miserable as the rain comes falling down.. "Mmmm so what can we use as background music" ?   :p

Actualy I think there must be someone putting these little montages together on X Factor with would appear to be a small semblance of good taste. There was a piece of John Barry music used later in a similar scene setting piece, lifted from the Diamonds Are Forever soundtrack.

@ Clotty: are you talking about the Italian X-Factor or the UK one? Dirk mentioning Italy makes me think it's the Italian edition, but I've never heard TB (or indeed any M.O.) used as background music during an X-Factor montage sequence... if it was during one of their 'daytime' short programmes, then I definitely didn't catch it as I don't follow those... I just watch the main evening show, which here is broadcast on Wednesdays, of which I'm a fan of - yes, I admit it... great music, most times, and it's so fun to watch, with the judges fighting all the time and stuff! :D

About the use of M.O. as background music, that's not very uncommon down here. And it's not just TB... indeed TB is his less exploited album, because down here everybody associates it with horror films (not because of The Exorcist, but because of Claudio Simonetti's very-similar-sounding main theme for Dario Argento's Deep Red), so unless they want to show something horrific or scary they never use anything from TB. But I've heard Incantations, Platinum, TSODE, Voyager, even TMB, all being used as background music for a number of things, from ads to to film trailers to promos for TV programmes to serious news stories. This last usage is especially frequent when science or research is concerned... a running gag among the journalistic environment here seems to be that, when they have to score a news story about science, they either choose Jarre or recent M.O. stuff - all other music just seems to not exist. :D

Yeah Ugo it was the British version of X Factor they just had some of the contestants over in Italy trying to seperate the crap from the not so crap.Unfortunatly it did`nt quite work out and some of the crap is still in there, but I`m pretty sure they do that on purpose sometimes just to wind people up.It was quite amusing really because for this particular "judge" the contestants normaly end up in Ireland where it inevitably rains.Whilst everybody else gets to go to far flung exotic locations such as Morroco or L.A. or whatever. So of course they`re all jumping around celebrating when they find out they`re going to Italy, only to find out that when they get there it`s absolutely pissing down.. (cue TB music at this point) ..Meanwhile back in Dublin the sun is beating down like it`s still the middle of summer, which just cheers them up all the more.

Normaly I don`t watch any of this nonsense you understand I just happened to be in the room at the time spending "quality time" with the family.Or to put it another way..I could`nt be arsed to get up after I`d just had me dinner.

Thanks, Dirk. Well, British X-Factor is surely weird in the way it treats its contestants... Italian ones NEVER move from Milan, except when they go to concerts or studios to record stuff - and when they do move, they all move together, all of the three judges' contestants - it's not that one judge's contestants are sent here and another's there. Such a thing just never happened here. However, if you are referring to what they call the 'bootcamp' (here it's called like that, I don't know if it's the same in the UK), that definitely takes place in a different location than Milan. But also there, the three judges are together, and their chosen contestants also are.

As a confirmation of what I was telling in my previous post above, yesterday night RAI's news bulletin on RaiUno (first channel of state network) ran a story about the three Nobel prize winners for medicine; its background music was a chirpy bit from Jarre's Oxygène. :D

They do the Bootcamp thing over here as well Ugo,which comes immediatly prior to the bit we`ve just had at the weekend.I don`t know I think it`s just a way of dragging it out a bit longer really, plus it`s a good excuse for all the judges to go on an all expenses paid holiday.Yeah I mean I did claim previously not to watch this show, but I think I`m starting to give too much away now.    :p
